R program connecting remote SQL Server

Connect to SQL Server on remote machine from R programming:

1. Create a SQL Server ODBC Data Source.

a. Open the ODBC Data Source Administrator as described :

Navigate to Control Panel ->Administrative tools -> Data Source(ODBC)

b. On the User DSN tab or the System DSN tab, click Add to add a user data source or a system data source.

c. Click SQL Native Client or SQL Server Native Client 10.0 to select the driver, and then click Finish.

d. Follow the instructions in the Wizard mentioning remote Server Name say “rconnect”. In next window select SQL Server authentication using a login ID and password entered by the user

i. LoginID

ii. Password

e. Change default database name in next window:

2. On R Terminal , use command

a. install.packages(“RODBC”)

b. library(RODBC)

c. odbcConnect(“rConn”)
where “rConn” is name of the user/System DSN

Enter password if required.
